H.E.L.P (Waihi) Inc (Plant Nursery)

Members of HELP Waihi have a common interest in our environment. A number are long-standing – being founder members in 1997. However, we welcome new members who can join in with our nursery propagation mornings or our voluntary planting activities.

In 2005 we underwent major re-organisation as we registered for GST and took on fulltime permanent staff. Work at and management of the nursery became the responsibility of the members and major redevelopment of facilities took place. Financial management was delegated to a sub-committee of the Society (elected at the AGM), while the permanent staff are managed on a part-time basis by a member who has linked job interests.

In recent times the range of work carried out by the Society has broadened considerably. Some aspects reflect the interests of the members – interacting with other environmental groups such as Kauri 2000, the Coromandel Coastal Walkways, Waihi Beach Environment Society, the Waiau Stream Care group and Uretara Estuary Managers and belonging to the Waikato Biodiversity Forum. Other aspects reflect the economic imperatives of having paid employees. Thus the permanent paid work force undertake jobs for Hauraki District Council, Waikato Regional Council, Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Western Bay of Plenty District Council, Uretara Estuary Managers and Wild About New Zealand (involving work for Auckland City Council and Auckland Airport Authority.)

The Society looks to maintain on-going projects which enhance our local environment. Therefore fund-raising via grants and subsidies is an on-going aspect of the management. These projects are explored under the Projects section.

Since 2019 HELP has developed a strong working partnership with the Hauraki Rail Trail Charitable Trust (HRTCT). HELP has donated $48,000 to the Trust, plus helped raise other funds for use at points along the Trail and has carried out much work on weed control and native plantings beside the Trail.
