Dr Mike Joy – Degrowth & Climate Change – Eastern BOP

This presentation will explore climate change and the concept of degrowth.
Growth is a key driver of climate change, yet unlimited growth is not possible on a finite planet.
Guest speaker is Dr. Mike Joy, well-known ecologist and senior researcher at Victoria University. He says we need to stop overshooting planetary boundaries and put policies in place at international, national, and local levels “to prioritise ecological and human wellbeing over economic growth”.
Dr. Joy will provide an up-to-date overview of the impacts of climate change, and explain why we can’t become a sustainable district, region, or country without addressing this issue of growth. He will also debunk the negativity around degrowth and paint a picture of what our life could be like if we embrace a lower growth model.
Climate change is one of a number of crises that are just symptoms of hitting ‘limits to growth’. A drastic reduction in consumption is required to support the world’s population without fossil fuels and to sustain our human society long-term.
Mike Joy says that degrowth is inevitable and that “the choice is ours: managed or a train wreck.”
