Waikaraka Estuary Managers

Waikaraka Estuary Managers Inc (WEM) was formed in 1997 when local residents became concerned by the takeover of their local estuary by mangroves. Now that the majority of the mangroves has been removed, continued maintenance is the main priority. This involves the removal of mangrove seedlings, and the constant monitoring of the many bait stations that have been established on the estuary margins. Ongoing monitoring of data for scientific purposes also continues. Co-operation with the Regional Council is vital, and WEM regularly makes submissions on matters concerning the Regional Council’s policies.
