Matua Estuary Care Group

Our aim is to enhance Matua estuary and salt marsh area by responsibly managing the spread of mangroves, controlling weed and pest infestations and carrying out rubbish clearance. This has been and will continue to be achieved by working in partnership with Tauranga City Council and Environment Bay of Plenty and aims to make Matua estuary more enjoyable and accessible to the wider community

Matua is indeed fortunate to have an attractive estuary environment but in order to enhance and maintain it proactive care is required. Passionate local residents established the Matua Estuary Care Group in July 2006. Our goal is quite simple: working in partnership with Environment BOP to control the spread of mangroves and remove rubbish, which will enable the Matua estuary to again become more enjoyable and readily accessible to the wider community.

The Care group operates under resource consent #65219 which allows it to remove mature and juvenile mangroves within approved areas located around the estuary. Adult mangrove removal can only be undertaken during the months of January through until the end of August whereas juvenile mangroves may be removed all year round. In addition to removal the adult mangroves are stacked and eventually burned on the estuary.
