Kawerau’s Urban Food Forest (KUFF) project was launched in Feb 2017, & it is hoped it will soon become a source of fresh produce. The project will see thousands of fruit & nut trees, berries & herbs planted in the Monika Lanham Reserve. People can help themselves to the produce at no charge. A nursery & glasshouse will be built, & workshops held on seed gathering & sowing, & a community garden planted to provide fresh vegetables year-round. The project is largely thanks to funding support from BOPRC Environmental Enhancement Fund (EEF), which contributed $20,000. Our vision is to raise environmental awareness & use the enthusiasm & skills of the community. Enabling communities such as Kawerau to share fresh, healthy food is a way of bringing people together & building stronger networks.
Keep Mauao Clean is a Facebook page which is intended to act as a platform to bring together like minded individuals in the community who are, or want to work towards, caring for the local environment.

We welcome volunteers to help us with our present work and encourage suggestions for other activities or projects that can further help to enhance the regions natural state, biodiversity and community well being.
We are a small group who have been involved in opening up the gully area with planing over 2000 trees. We are now working to try to keep the area weed free while the trees grow! There is also a good walking track of 1.2km through the gully.
Landcare Okareka volunteer group was formed in May 2003, initially to assist Rotorua District Council with management of the Lake Okareka Walkway Reserve. Volunteers undertake on going weed control; planting (over 12-13 years volunteers have planted 1000's of native plants); we also manage rat bait to the Lake Okareka settlement area (in support of Rotorua Forest & Bird's pest control project in Tikitapu Scenic Reserve to help native mistletoe), landowners and residents own their bait stations: Landcare Okareka has an active pest animal trapping programme targeting rats and mustelids in the esplanade margins around Lake Okareka, to protect native wetland bird life, especially dab chicks. Working Bees are usually held on 4th Saturday of each month February to November. 9am to 12noon
A fresh take on an old idea: We've taken the basic concept from a tradition of successful community gardens. But here is our ‘Kiwi' twist where we help people and communities to start up their own community gardens: •People rent and tend their own garden plot. •Plots are all ready to ‘Get Growing' •Highly productive plots are great value •Raised plots look trendy and tidy •The definite emphasis on ‘community' •Seasonal, relevant learning opportunities.

Otanewainuku Kiwi Trust – To Protect and Restore the indigenous ecosystem and biodiversity of Otanewainuku
The Otanewainuku Kiwi Trust was formed in 2002 to preserve our Taonga (treasure) of native species for generations to come & reverse the decline of a population of North Island Brown Kiwi in Otanewainuku Forest. 13 years on, with a population of over 20 Kiwi & 37 Kokako, the Trust has grown well beyond the hopes of the original Trustees. The Otanewainuku forest lies 25km south of Tauranga & 20km south-west of Te Puke & comprises 1500 hectares of unlogged, lowland podocarp forest; one of the finest examples of this type of forest in the Bay of Plenty. Originally set aside as a timber reserve in 1878; it remains today because the local community have fought to protect it. OKT currently manages over 137kms of trap & bait station lines, 247 stoat tunnels & 1800 bait stations within the forest.

Our aim is to monitor and protect the Pilot Bay habitat and environment. One of our members walk the beach every day, ensuring the beach is clean, and debris free in the process. We liaise with the coast care co-ordinator and Park Ranger, and have assisted with plantings, as well as assisted in the rescue of wildlife, when appropriate. Several of our members now patrol the surf beach also, and when numbers permit, we may man the other side on a daily rostered basis also (as we do along Pilot Bay).

Predator Free BOP is a community-led, backyard trapping initiative that aims to bring native birds back to our suburbs.
The biggest threat to our native birds are the rats who have taken over our native bush and urban areas. With the help of our sponsors; Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Tauranga City Council, Western Bay of Plenty District Council, Envirohub, NZ Landcare Trust, Bay Conservation Alliance and Department of Conservation our goal is to get a backyard rat trap into one in five houses in suburban Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty.
This is a good way to connect with each other in the community, and share local produce, plants, seedlings, seeds, ideas and friendship :) Feel free to come along to any of the monthly gatherings in different backyards & other interesting places, and bring something for the swap table :) For updates, email Ena to go on the email list, and/or go to the facebook page to join.
Rotoehu Ecological Trust (RET) was officially established as a charitable trust in July 2013. While the main goal of the group is to protect and grow our population of native North Island kōkako, enhancement and protection of the wider broadleaf forest ecosystem is also a key priority. To that end, the Trust holds regular workdays to maintain the areas network of bait stations, carries out pest control, and encourages the public to engage with our environment by calling in the kōkako for visitors. Currently the main activities are pest control within part of Pongakawa Ecological Area for the protection of kokako and the other forest inhabitants. Our current goal is to reach 100 breeding pairs by 2020 which will involve increasing our pest control area to the full extent of Pongakawa Area

About once a month we present a film, usually a documentary, covering an issue that is either ignored or poorly covered in the mainstream media, regarding important issues of which the general public may not be well informed. We often have guest panelists after the films (for those who want to stay on) to discuss issues arising from the film, provide a local context and to answer questions.
Formed 10 years ago initially to encourage bird life and control weeds around the foreshore of the Uretara Estuary Katikati. Public requests persuaded us to begin clearing the ever expanding mangroves, It soon became apparent that the major problem facing the estuary was the silt coming down from the catchment so we began working with landowners to rehabilitate and fence stream banks. So now our volunteers are involved in work from the Kaimais to the sea.

Waikaraka Estuary Managers Inc (WEM) was formed in 1997 when local residents became concerned by the takeover of their local estuary by mangroves. Now that the majority of the mangroves has been removed, continued maintenance is the main priority. This involves the removal of mangrove seedlings, and the constant monitoring of the many bait stations that have been established on the estuary margins. Ongoing monitoring of data for scientific purposes also continues. Co-operation with the Regional Council is vital, and WEM regularly makes submissions on matters concerning the Regional Council’s policies.

We offer about 50% of our garden beds to community groups and schools to work for themselves. We provide the soil, advice, general weeding and irrigation of the garden beds. With the proviso that these groups share of their harvest, for large group this could be a token sharing of a strawberry :)
The remaining garden beds are worked by volunteers (families and individuals) to provide food to the community, free of charge or for a small donation if people are able. The harvest is freely available to volunteers.
We wish to become a gathering place, a place of learning and peer to peer teaching. As the garden grows so to do we grow, in scope and the services we will be able to provide.
